Bangladesh is a land of rivers. No other country in the world has as many rivers as Bangladesh. Her rivers originate from the Himalayas and fall into the Bay of Bengal. They are full in the rainy season and they are almost dry in summer.
There are two kinds of rivers in our country. They are the big rivers and the small rivers. the big rivers are the Meghna, the Padma, the Jamuna, the Brahmaputra, the Buriganga, the Karnafuly etc, and the small rivers are the Madhumati, the Gomti etc. Besides them, there are many beautiful rivers in Bangladesh. They are the Surma, the Sitalakhaya, the Tetulia, the Mahananda etc.
Some rivers are also great source of energy. They have been used to produce power. The hydro-electric projects like that of the Karnafuli can solve the power problem of Bangladesh.
Our rivers are a great source of wealth. They supply a large bulk of fish. Fish is our main item of food after rice. The fishermen of our country catch fishes from the rivers.
The rivers are the great of our agriculture. Rivers play an important role in our economy. Bangladesh is an agricultural country and her agriculture mainly depends on these rivers.
Our rivers are the main way of communication. Steamers, launches and boats ply in the rivers all the year round and carry passengers and goods.
The rivers and their banks of Bangladesh are a great source of beauty. The beauty and the natural scenery of the surrounding area give a great relief to the troubled hearts. The big and small rivers flowing throughout the country have also made Bangladesh rich beautiful and happy. Our life is influenced by them in many ways
Most of the rural songs like Bhatiali and Jari are associated with the people living on the banks of the rivers. People living on the banks derive immense benefit from the rivers. Much of our joys and sorrows depend on the rivers.
Our rivers are usually calm in the morning of winter. But they look violent and fearful in summer and autumn. In these times they grow wild and sweep away large areas causing heavy damage to the crops and habitation.
Our economy mainly depends on the rivers. Without rivers Bangladesh cannot be developed. They are the gifts of Allah for our country. They are the life of this country. They are also source of our prosperity and happiness. If there were no rivers in Bangladesh, Bangladesh would become desert. So, we should make the proper use of each and every river as an asset.

It is very easy to say something about others and even to pass one’s comments on their activities, good or bad. But it is very difficult to say anything about oneself. It is because if one talks highly of oneself, one will be dubbed as an egoist. If one talks lowly of oneself, one may be disparaged as one suffering from inferiority complex.
This, however, does not pester a man of truth such as Mahatma Gandhi was. A man of truth remains unaffected by praise or censure.  The concern of such a man is to speak the truth whatever others may think of him.
I find a trap even here. It is hard even to call oneself a man of truth as even that would amount to. Being one fond of self-praise or self-flattery. To assert again, a real man of truth is not bothered even by such considerations. My name is Salman Farsi. I live in Bangladesh. My friends call me ‘Love Light’. This actually started as a reaction against my own assertion about my best friend, Aaleyah, whom I nicknamed ‘Sun Light’.
My family comprises of five members. These members are my mother, my father, my brother, my sister and myself. My father is a doctor in the local government hospital. He is an M.D. in medicine. He is a heart specialist. He is very gentle and kind. He is very sympathetic to the patients. He listens to their problems attentively. He tries to prescribe the best medicine for them. He does not accept bribe from anybody. My mother is a school teacher. She teaches English the local government primary school. She is very sincere in her work. She holds extra classes for weak students. She also teaches the pupils the importance of character, cleanliness and hard work. She also tells them about the importance of discipline and respect to their parents and teachers. My brother’s name is Aman Ullah. He is elder to me. He reads at science in 12th class in the Dhaka College. He is very intelligent and hard working. He always stands first in the class. He also takes part in sports and extracurricular activities. I read at class 10 in Shanarpar Sheikh Mortoza Ali High School. I am also good at studies. I also often stand first in my class. I love painting and music also. I have won a number of prizes and trophies in competitions. Ours is a small happy family. I pray to God that all should have such a good family.

A village fair is a kind of annual gathering. People from all walks of life gather here for enjoyment. It brings a change in their monotonous life. A village fair is usually held on the bank of a river by the side of a big pond of an important place. It is also held in the open field under a big ancient tree. It holds on Eid day, on the 10th day of Muharram and on the first and last day of the Bengali year. Preparation for the fair goes on for a long time. People eagerly wait for the day. Sometimes the place is decorated nicely. Temporary stalls are also set up. A village fair is a kind of exhibition of rural cottage industries. The potters, carpenters, blacksmiths, weaver, and hawkers come here with different types of goods. The handmade goods are attractive to the villagers. The cane and bamboo products, toys, clothes, utensils, sweetmeats are sold in plenty. The farmers buy spades, sickles, and baskets made of bamboo. They are sold at cheap price though they have beautiful designs on them. So, the fair has economic importance. A village fair offers a lot of amusements like Jatra, circus, nagordolas, bioscope, magic show, and puppet show are special attractions of the fair. But a village fair has demerits too. Gambligs of different kinds takes place here. The fair also lacks proper sanitation. A village fair is a great recreation for the villagers. It helps small scale trade and business.

To  move  from  one  place  to  another  place  by  train  is  called  a  journey  by  train.  A  journey  by train  is  really  pleasing  and  interesting.  It  is  also  full  of  joys  and  charms.

Once  I  was  invited  to  go  to  Rajshahi  to  join  the  birthday  anniversary  of  my  friend.  I accepted  the  offer  with  joy  and  made  up  my  mind  to  go  there.

I  reached  the  Kamalapur  Railway  Station  at  9:00  am.  There  was  a  great  rush  of  passengers in  the  platform.  I  purchased  a  ticket  of  second  class.  I  got  into  a  compartment  and  occupied a  seat  by  the  window.  There  were  five  more  passengers  in  it.  The  guard  blew  the  whistle  and  waved  the  flag.  The  train  started.  Soon  it  began  running  in  full  speed.  I  sat  at  the  corner  of  the  window  and  enjoyed  the  scenery  all  around.  The  trees  and  houses  on  both sides  seemed  to  be  running  backwards.  I  saw  the  men  working  in  their  corn-fields.  Some cows  were  grazing  here  and  there.

As  it  was  a  mail  train,  it  halted  at  the  important  stations  only.  Some  passengers  got  down and  some  got  in.  The ticket-checker  checked  the  tickets  of  the  passengers.

Thus  passing  varied  and  pleasant  sceneries  the  train  arrived  at  Rajshahi  Station  at  4:00  pm. I  got  down  and  went  to  my  friend’s  house  by  taxi.

The  journey  by  train  is  not  expensive  but  amusing.  It  was  one  of  the  great  journey  in  my life.  I  shall  never  forget  it.

A journey by bus is very pleasant. It is really a source of refreshment. I had the chance of enjoying a journey by bus last month. My cousin married a Rahmatpur in Barisal. On that occasion. I joined the bridal party. Some of my intimate friends also went with me.

I looked outside and enjoyed the beautiful sights of nature. The field were full with different crops. I found the trees with new leaves with spring flowers. l our buses crossed many rivers and canals over the high bridges. On the way at Gaurnadi, we stopped and refreshed ourselves with famous Gaurnadi-Doi with sweets and tea. The buses started again and did not stop until we reached Rahmatpur. It was a spring afternoon. The weather was very nice. The gentle breeze were blowing nicely and we all were amused with the beautiful songs of the famous singers through the bus audio system. Our bus ran and ran. At a time, it began to run through beautiful outskirts. The sun was going down. The sights were beautiful to look at. We enjoyed the beauty of green fields, orchards and bushes of bamboo’s on both sides of the road.
Around 8:00 pm, we reached Rahmatpur.
The buses were stopped before the house of bride’s father. We were very glad to have a grand reception there. l we were overjoyed and got our mind refreshed. It was a memorable journey for me. I really enjoyed it heartily.

A journey by boat is full of charms and joys. It is also a part and parcel of education. So, I undertook a journey by boat along with my friends.
To make the journey joyful, we took a tape-recorder and a camera. We also took some snacks. The journey was from Atrai to Singra.
On the fixed date, we hired a “Dingi” boat. There were two boatmen on it. We started  our journey at the afternoon.
The weather was very swiftly. After sometime the evening was drawing near.
I enjoyed the beauty of nature all around. The full moon was up in the east. The breeze was blowing. The soft moonlight converted the world into a wonderful dream-land. I felt a heavenly bliss. I caught some charming scenery with my camera.
One of my friends began to dance with the music of the tape-recorder on the stern. It gave us much pleasure. The wind was in our favor. The boatmen set sail. Then it was moving in full speed. So, we reached our destination after a while.
While we were passing by a big market, the boat casted anchor. Then we landed. We went to the market and purchased a fine big Hilsha fish and vegetables.
A delicious dish was cooked with the Hilsha fish. We took our meal in the boat. We had a hearty meal.
A journey by boat is really pleasant and refreshing in a fair weather. It gives a golden opportunity to enjoy the beauty of nature. It broadens our outlook. It may be dangerous in a bad weather.
