A village fair is a kind of annual gathering. People from all walks of
life gather here for enjoyment. It brings a change in their monotonous
life. A village fair is usually held on the bank of a river by the side
of a big pond of an important place. It is also held in the open field
under a big ancient tree. It holds on Eid day, on the 10th day of
Muharram and on the first and last day of the Bengali year. Preparation
for the fair goes on for a long time. People eagerly wait for the day.
Sometimes the place is decorated nicely. Temporary stalls are also set
up. A village fair is a kind of exhibition of rural cottage industries.
The potters, carpenters, blacksmiths, weaver, and hawkers come here with
different types of goods. The handmade goods are attractive to the
villagers. The cane and bamboo products, toys, clothes, utensils,
sweetmeats are sold in plenty. The farmers buy spades, sickles, and
baskets made of bamboo. They are sold at cheap price though they have
beautiful designs on them. So, the fair has economic importance. A
village fair offers a lot of amusements like Jatra, circus, nagordolas,
bioscope, magic show, and puppet show are special attractions of the
fair. But a village fair has demerits too. Gambligs of different kinds
takes place here. The fair also lacks proper sanitation. A village fair
is a great recreation for the villagers. It helps small scale trade and
business.
